Kosta Boda, a renowned Swedish manufacturer of art glass and tableware, was founded as Kosta Glasbruk in 1742 by two army officers, Anders Koskull and Georg Bogislaus Staël von Holstein, making the company name a portmanteau of their own. Early production focused on essentials like window glass, chandeliers, and drinking vessels, but the factory soon embraced new trends and technical developments, such as producing pressed glass in the 1880s and making a pivotal move in 1898 by hiring Gunnar Gunnarsson Wennerberg as its first in-house artist, beginning a long tradition of collaborating with well-known artists and designers like Anna Ehrner, Monica Backstrom, and Bertil Vallien. Mergers with Boda Glasbruk in 1976 and Orrefors in 1985 consolidated its position, and the company is now part of the multinational New Wave Group AB, with their works in permanent collections in major museums worldwide including the Swedish National Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
