Stephen Dee Edwards (born 1954) is an American glass artist whose work flowed directly from his childhood on the Pacific coast—where the sea and surf informed his aesthetic—and was developed through rigorous study at the Pilchuck Glass School and the Penland School of Crafts. He earned a B.A. from San Jose State University and an M.F.A. from Illinois State University in 1980, then opened his first private glass studio in North Carolina in 1982. In 1988, he began teaching at Alfred University (New York), where he built one of the largest hot‐glass programs in the U.S. over a 22‑year tenure. Edwards’ sculptural works—frequently inspired by marine forms and the ephemeral qualities of water and light—employ complex casting, sand‐blasting, and acid‑etching techniques, and are included in the permanent collections of major institutions such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
