Win Ng was born in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1936. He attended Saint Mary’s Academy for six years, studying the Chinese language, before enrolling at City College. Ng quickly established his reputation as a master ceramist, with an initial focus on abstract, non-utilitarian works in the tradition of Peter Voulkos. After serving in the U.S. Army he attended the California School of Fine Arts and received his BFA in 1959. In 1960, he attended Mills College, but never completed his MFA. In 1958 he had his first solo show at the Michow Gallery in New York, which led to his representation by Braunstein Gallery in San Francisco, who continues to show his work to this day. In 1965 he shifted his focus to “functional” work, a collaborative endeavor with artist Spaulding Taylor. As co-founder of Environmental Ceramics (later named Taylor & Ng), Ng established himself as a decorative designer, creating finely wrought hand-crafted artware for specialty stores and private residences. He produced ceramic bowls, pots, bottles, vases, dishes, slab constructions, sculptures in earthenware and metal, paintings, drawings, book illustrations, and hundreds of decorative designs for Taylor & Ng in San Francisco and their division within Macy’s in New York City. He passed away in 1991, with his works in permanent collections on the East and West Coast, as well as in the Smithsonian.
