Mikael Melbye was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1955. He is descended from the 19th Century painter Anton Melbye, and started his training as a painter with his mother (a watercolorist) in early childhood. He later studied underKay Christensen, Richard Schmid and Francis Cunningham. However, he pivoted to performance in his teens, becoming an internationally known opera singer who sang on virtually every major opera stage of the world including La Scala, San Carlo, the Rome Opera, Covent Garden and The Met in New York. In 1996, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II bestowed a knighthood upon him, followed by a peerage in 2006. In 2014 he left the stage to focus once more on painting. His full-scale classical style oil portraits and landscapes can be found in museums and private collections in Europe, the US, and Australia.
