Walter Granville-Smith (1870-1938) was an American painter and illustrator, born in South Granville, New York. He trained in Newark, then under artists such as James Carroll Beckwith and Willard Metcalf, and studied in Europe at the Académie Julian. Granville-Smith’s early career was in magazine illustration—his work appeared in Harper’s, Scribner’s, Collier’s and others—but he later shifted toward landscape and seascape painting, often depicting idyllic coastal scenes and shorelines, particularly in Bellport, NY. He was active in several artist societies, won many awards, and his works are held in museum collections such as the Smithsonian and various art institutes.
