Emile A. Gruppé (1896-1978) was an American painter best known for his Impressionistic landscapes and marine scenes, especially the harbors, fishermen, and coastlines of Gloucester and Rockport, Massachusetts. He was born in Rochester, New York, but spent part of his childhood in the Netherlands—his father, Charles Paul Gruppé, painted with the Hague School—before the family returned to the U.S. Emile studied at the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League, and in Paris, and later taught for many years; he founded the Gloucester School of Painting and ran summer schools, sharing his mastery of color, light, and brisk, expressive brushwork. He also travelled, wintering in Vermont and Florida, where he painted tropical landscapes, and published books on painting technique in the 1970s. (Emile Gruppe Gallery)
