Abstract Expressionism was a post–World War II art movement that emerged in New York in the late 1940s, marking a radical shift in modern painting. Characterized by gestural brushwork, large-scale canvases, and an emphasis on spontaneous, emotional expression, it reflected both personal introspection and the existential mood of the era. Artists such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, and Franz Kline rejected traditional composition in favor of dynamic movement, improvisation, and the physical act of painting itself. Rooted in Surrealism’s exploration of the subconscious and influenced by the trauma of war, Abstract Expressionism established New York as the new center of the art world and defined the visual language of modern American art.
