Sarah Gay Stevenson was born in Canada in October 1859. Her work showed an exceptional eye for detail, capturing landscapes that were busy but peaceful simultaneously. She traveled to Rochester, New York to study under the landscape artist Edwin Landseer Harris. She eventually became his wife and was responsible for the decoration of his tombstone and funeral upon his death in 1901 from alcoholism (listed at the time as heart disease), which the rest of his family did not attend. Seeking inspiration and a fresh start after his passing, she traveled to Pasadena, California in 1904, where she opened her own studio and exhibited at Kanst and other local galleries. She passed away there in 1943 from arteriosclerosis, and her ashes were returned to Rochester and reunited with her husband’s grave in Mount Hope Cemetery.
