Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1879, Frank Van Sloun showed talent and dedication for both arts and sports. After studying at the St. Paul School of Fine Arts, he eventually signed with a professional baseball team, before returning fully to the arts at the age of 22 and joining the Art Students League in New York City. During his career, Van Sloun experimented with a variety of styles and mediums including Impressionism, Realism, Pointillism and pastel, oil, tempera, watercolor, gouache, monotypes and etchings. The artist was also highly respected for his teaching abilities, credited with bringing the credo "art for art's sake" to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he eventually settled. He joined the board of directors of the Bohemian Club and began painting murals throughout the Bay Area. As an exponent of Social Realism under the tutelage of Robert Henri and other members of the Ashcan School, he encouraged his students to develop their own styles, rather than copying him or any of the other “popular” artists of the day.
