Robert “Shoofly” Shufelt was born on February 16th, 1935 in Champaign, Illinois. He attended art school as a youth and earned his degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Lake Forest College, a division of the University of Illinois. He worked in illustration for over a decade before moving to a cattle ranch near Wickenburg, Arizona in the 1970s. It was here that he found his calling, gaining international acclaim for his depictions of the modern-day cowboy and Ranch lifestyle in the Southwest, often in stunning photo-realistic detail using solely pencil graphite. As of 1991 he lives in New Mexico, often publishing his work in small editions of stone, offset, or digital prints. In 2005 he was given the Great American Cowboy Award, as well as named Artist of the Year by the state of New Mexico in 2007. In 2014 he was awarded the New Mexico Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts alongside author George R. R. Martin. Shufelt's artwork has been represented in galleries in New Mexico, Arizona, and Wyoming, and exhibited in museums across the United States including the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, the Tucson Art Museum, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. He continues to make painstakingly detailed works of art to this day, crediting the dry and breathtaking climate around him with his longevity and artistic inspiration.
