Eugenio Lucas Villaamil, sometimes called “The Younger,” was born in Madrid, Spain on January 14th, 1858. He was the son of the painter Eugenio Lucas Velázquez and his wife, Francisca, the youngest sister of Jenaro Pérez Villaamil. His first art lessons were in his father’s studio and his formal studies were at the Escuela Especial de Pintura de Madrid. He made his début at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts shortly after graduating, and gained a reputation as a refined Spanish costumbrismo painter. Many of his works were painted in the style of Francisco de Goya, which occasionally led to mistaken attributions of his pieces. He specialized in Aragonese themes, notably in his bullfight scenes and aristocratic gatherings which were often very ornate. In addition, he was popular as a portrait painter among the bourgeoisie, and frequently visited Paris, France for further inspiration, combining influences between both countries deftly. Despite his popularity and being awarded the Order of Charles III, he never quite emerged from the shadow of his father, and died in Madrid on January 23rd, 1918.
