Robert Richenburg (1917-2006) American, Torn Paper on Paper Collaged Abstract "Heavy Snow". 1966.
Provenance: From the Rose Art Museum, Waltham, MA.
This piece is on page 26 of Robert Richenburg Abstract Expressionist Exhibition Catalog done by Rose Art Museum August 28 - October 17, 1993.
From the catalog; "Heavy Snow is the only collage in which he simply tore the paper away, for the effect was so engaging that he stopped in this first stage. The many white torn forms give the impression of pine branches laden with the weight of snow. Despite being abstract, this work seems to recall Charles Burchfield's winter scenes!"

Sight Size: 22 x 28 in.
Robert Richenburg (1917-2006) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter whose bold, gestural canvases embodied the intensity and freedom of the postwar New York art scene. Trained under Hans Hofmann, Richenburg developed a style marked by dense, dynamic compositions and dramatic contrasts of light and color. He exhibited alongside leading figures like Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline during the 1950s, gaining recognition for his emotionally charged, tactile approach to abstraction. Although he later stepped back from the New York spotlight, his work continued to evolve, reflecting a lifelong commitment to the expressive power of paint. In later decades, renewed interest in his art affirmed his place among the key voices of mid-century American abstraction.
