Fantastic Robert Richenburg (1917-2006) American, Acrylic on Paper Abstract Expressionist "Meadow". Signed lower right. Framed.

Provenance: From the Rose Art Museum, MA.

This piece is on page 28 of Robert Richenburg Abstract Expressionist Exhibition Catalog done by Rose Art Museum August 28 - October 17, 1993.

From the catalog; "In the pastoral collages that he began in 1964, Richenburg created works that are quite different in feeling from almost everything else he had produced until then. In these, he rolled paint between two sheets of paper, pressed the papers together and then separated them. Often the paper would get stuck to the paint, and the textures that resulted were coated unevenly with the residue of the white paper that was pulled away. Meadow with its surface blanketed by a soft, almost cottony whiteness born of tearing and sticking, conveys a pastoral calm".

Overall Size: 15 x 14 3/4 in.

Sight Size: 9 x 8 3/4 in.

Robert Richenburg (1917-2006) was an American Abstract Expressionist painter associated with the first generation of the New York School. Born in Chicago, he studied at the Art Students League and under Hans Hofmann, whose emphasis on dynamic color and structure deeply influenced his work. Richenburg became known in the 1950s for his bold, gestural canvases marked by dense, energetic brushwork and dramatic contrasts of light and dark. He exhibited alongside artists such as de Kooning, Pollock, and Kline, gaining recognition for his intense, visceral approach to abstraction. After leaving New York in the 1960s, he continued to paint and teach, including at Cornell University and Pratt Institute. His later rediscovery reaffirmed his place among the key figures of mid-century American abstraction.
