Donald Quataert (1941–2011) was an American historian known for his influential work on the social and economic history of the Ottoman Empire. A professor at Binghamton University, he helped reshape the field of Ottoman studies by focusing on ordinary people—such as workers, peasants, and artisans—rather than only political elites. Quataert’s research explored topics like labor, industrialization, and everyday life in the late Ottoman period, emphasizing how global economic changes affected the empire’s society. His widely used book, The Ottoman Empire, 1700–1922, is considered a key introduction to modern Ottoman history and is frequently assigned in university courses.
