Audrey Hepburn was born in 1929 in Belgium and led a privileged early life before suffering extreme hardships, including severe malnutrition and the loss of her family fortune, during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. After being told she lacked the constitution for a career as a prima ballerina, she pivoted to acting in London and achieved overnight fame on Broadway in Gigi. Her 1953 breakout film role in Roman Holiday made her the first actress to win an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe for a single performance. Throughout the mid-20th century, she became a global fashion icon and starred in classics such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s and My Fair Lady, eventually becoming one of only 27 people to achieve EGOT status. In 1992, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her extensive humanitarian work with UNICEF in impoverished regions across Africa, Asia, and South America. Hepburn passed away in Switzerland in 1993, leaving a legacy as one of the most beloved actresses and influential style icons in history.
