Max Ernst was born in Brühl, Prussia on April 2nd, 1891, and became a pioneer of the Dada and Surrealist movements whose experimental approach redefined modern art despite his lack of formal training. He began painting as a hobby in 1909 while studying philosophy at the University of Bonn, and was traumatized by his service as a soldier in World War I, famously stating that his former self “died” in 1914 and was “resurrected” upon his demobilization in 1918. He joined the Die Rheinischen Expressionisten group of artists and is credited with inventing revolutionary techniques such as frottage, using pencil rubbings of textured surfaces, and grattage, which involves scraping paint across a canvas to reveal underlying imprints. Ernst frequently featured a bird alter ego named Loplop in his work, a motif born from a childhood psychological connection between the death of a pet bird and the birth of his sister, and his unconventional drawing methods led him to create novels and pamphlets using collage methods as well. His personal life was as unconventional as his art, traveling the world and marrying numerous times as well as involved in a famous ménage à trois with poet Paul Éluard and his wife Gala before he moved illegally to France, and he had a distant relationship with his only son, artist Jimmy Ernst. Though designated an “undesirable foreigner” during World War II, he eventually achieved immense financial success and died in Paris on April 1st, 1976 as one of the 20th Century’s most influential and complicated artistic creators.
