Richard Anuszkiewicz (1930-2020) American, "New Glory" Hors de Commerce Screenprint. Psychedelic rectangular repetitions of neon colors that seem to pulse the longer you look at them. Signed in pencil bottom right near the watermark, and numbered "H.C. 9/25" along with the date 1975. In art print terminology, “HC” or “H.C.” stands for Hors de Commerce, which translates to “out of trade” or “not for sale” in English. These prints, similar to Artist’s Proofs (APs), are not intended for commercial sale but are often given as gifts by the artist or publisher to those involved in the printmaking process, like the artist or printer. Often they are specifically meant for display purposes, such as in a gallery, and as such they are usually one-of-a-kind prints.

Richard Joseph Anuszkiewicz was born in Erie, Pennsylvania on May 23rd, 1930 to Polish immigrants, first studying at the Cleveland Institute of Art before honing his precise geometric painting style while earning a Master of Fine Arts at Yale University. A prominent painter, printmaker, and sculptor who emerged as a leading figure in the mid 20th Century Op Art movement, he was mentored by renowned abstract artist Josef Albers, who taught him to push the boundaries of visual perception. His work primarily investigated the optical chemistry of high-intensity complementary colors applied to structural configurations like nested squares, an approach that resulted in vibrant, symmetrical compositions that famously appeared to vibrate, blur, or glow with light. He consistently developed these optical concepts across several decades, exhibiting internationally and earning high praise from Life magazine as one of the movement’s premier “wizards” alongside Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley. He died on May 19th, 2020, with his work on display at dozens of museums around the country including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
