Rafael Soyer (1899–1987) was a Russian-born American realist painter renowned for his depictions of urban life, social issues, and the human condition. After immigrating to the United States in the early 20th century, Soyer studied at the National Academy of Design and developed a style that combined classical training with a focus on the everyday struggles of ordinary people. His works often featured portraits, figure studies, and scenes of New York City, capturing the city's vibrancy and its diverse population. Known for his sensitivity to light and form, Soyer's art reflects his deep empathy for his subjects, establishing him as an influential figure in American realism.
