Prince Duncan-Williams is a Ghanaian-born artist renowned for his intricate silk thread compositions, a technique rooted in his family’s multigenerational tradition of textile artistry. Now based in the United States, Duncan-Williams has spent over 35 years developing his craft, with the last two decades focused exclusively on his signature silk mosaic style. His work merges the vibrancy of West African heritage with modernist influences, creating a dynamic fusion of culture, color, and form.
Using silk threads traditionally found in royal Kente cloth, Duncan-Williams creates each piece by hand, laying thousands of individual strands onto boards using adhesive—never stitching. This meticulous process can take anywhere from 30 to over 300 hours per artwork. His compositions are celebrated for their rhythmic flow and vibrant colors, often described as visual jazz, echoing the improvisational spirit of musicians like Coltrane and Davis.
Inspired by the likes of Picasso, Matisse, and Romare Bearden, Duncan-Williams blends cubism and abstraction with African symbolism, resulting in works that shimmer with life and energy. He has exhibited across the United States, including at the prestigious Smithsonian Craft Show, and continues to produce both personal and commissioned pieces that honor tradition while pushing artistic boundaries.
