Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) was an American painter and printmaker renowned for her intimate, tender portrayals of women and children, often exploring themes of motherhood and domestic life. Born in Pennsylvania, she spent much of her adult life in France, where she became closely associated with the Impressionist movement and was one of the few women—and Americans—invited to exhibit with them. Deeply influenced by Edgar Degas and Japanese woodblock prints, Cassatt developed a distinctive style marked by soft, luminous color and masterful draftsmanship. Her work challenged the conventions of her time by presenting women as thoughtful, complex individuals rather than decorative figures. Cassatt's legacy endures as a pioneering female voice in art, and her contributions continue to be celebrated in major museums around the world.
