Loran Frederick Wilford (1892–1972) was an American painter, illustrator, and longtime art educator who became a significant figure in the Sarasota, Florida art community. Born in Wamego, Kansas, he trained at the Kansas City Art Institute and began his career illustrating for major magazines in the 1920s and ’30s before moving into fine art. Wilford was known for genre scenes, landscapes, and watercolors that often captured everyday life and coastal Florida settings, and his work was exhibited widely in galleries across the United States. He taught watercolor and illustration at the Ringling School of Art for nearly three decades, helped shape the post‑war Sarasota artist colony, and was active in artistic associations such as the Salmagundi Club, the Sarasota Art Association, and the Royal Watercolor Society in London.
