Fiore Custode (1934 – 2015) was an American painter and long-time art educator who taught at the Ringling School of Art and Design (now Ringling College of Art and Design) for over five decades before retiring in 2014. His work, including pieces like Propagation A.D. (1963), reflects a deep engagement with the human figure and abstracted forms, showing the influence of Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Goya and Velázquez, whom he cited as inspirations for going beyond “pretty pictures.” Custode’s legacy spans both his expressive oil paintings and his profound impact as a mentor to generations of artists in the Sarasota art community.
