Jerry Farnsworth (1895 – 1982) was an influential American painter and art educator best known for his portrait and figure painting as well as his leadership in the mid-20th-century American art community. Born in Dalton, Georgia, he studied at the Corcoran School of Art and with Charles W. Hawthorne on Cape Cod before establishing himself in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he and his wife, artist Helen Sawyer Farnsworth, ran the Farnsworth School of Art; they later founded a winter school in Sarasota, Florida, helping shape the local art colony. Farnsworth exhibited widely, was elected a full member of the National Academy of Design, and received numerous awards; his work appeared in major institutions including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and he also taught at the Art Students League and the University of Illinois and authored instructional books on painting.
