Lawrence Harry Sitter (best known as Larry Sitter) was born January 5th, 1913 in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of poor coal miners, and showed an early interest in art, moving to Palm Springs, California in 1937 to work in his brother’s printing business. There he met his wife Mary and first began exploring painting in the early 1950s, developing a following for his Western oil landscapes while working alongside Fred Chisnall, Jimmy Swinnerton, John Hilton and many other Smoketree painters at the Desert Art Center and the Shadow Mountain Palette Club. His first one-man show was at the Jeanette McIntyre Gallery in 1962, and after his death on September 27th, 1993 a memorial fund to support budding self-taught artists was set up in his name.
