Jules Dupré (April 5, 1811 – October 6, 1889) was a French painter associated with the Barbizon School, known for his expressive and atmospheric landscape paintings that emphasized the power and mood of nature. Born in Nantes, Dupré developed a deep appreciation for natural scenery and became particularly skilled at depicting dramatic skies, wind-swept trees, and rural environments. His work was influenced by his travels to England, where he admired the art of John Constable, and he later formed a close friendship with fellow artist Théodore Rousseau. Dupré’s paintings played a significant role in shifting French landscape art toward greater realism and emotional depth, helping pave the way for later movements such as Impressionism.
