Yue Tin Mui was born into a poor farming family in Leong Shan Kwangtung in Canton, China in 1892, but displayed a prodigal interest in art that caught the eye of a local merchant who became his patron in his teens. Mostly self-taught, his interest in modern landscape painting came after exposure to European art styles while traveling throughout the country, and he founded the First Art Association Canton in 1921, working as a professor at the Art Academy and publishing books on watercolor brush painting. In the 1950s he fled political upheaval in the mainland to Hong Kong, where he established a studio and began to exhibit around the world, teaching at St. Stephen’s College in Hong Kong right up until his death in 1985. His works can be found in numerous public, private, and corporate collections across the globe, including galleries along the American west coast.
