Josef Foshko (1891-1971) was a painter and watercolorist who trained at the Imperial Art School and spent around seven years studying and exhibiting in Paris, including at the Société des Artistes Français and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, before emigrating to the U.S. around 1912. His first solo exhibition in New York came in 1935, followed by several others, and throughout his career he exhibited coast to coast, including at prestigious venues like the Whitney, National Academy, Carnegie Institute, and the Golden Gate International Exposition. Foshko’s versatile body of work—ranging from oils and temperas to watercolors—frequently depicted figure genres, landscapes, and everyday scenes, and is held in permanent collections at institutions such as the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Brooklyn Museum.
