Johnny Yazzie (full name Johnny Tso Yazzie; December 29, 1945 – May 21, 2021) was a Navajo (Diné) painter and sculptor born on the Navajo Reservation in Howell Mesa near Tuba City, Arizona. He was educated at Tuba City Boarding School, the Sherman Institute in California, the Institute of American Indian Arts, and the College of Santa Fe, where he earned both an associate’s and a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art. Yazzie became a leading figure in the development of contemporary Native American art, known for his oil paintings and sculptures depicting Southwest landscapes, Pueblo and Plains portraiture, ceremonial scenes, and spiritual motifs. His work was widely exhibited and collected, appearing in institutions such as the Heard Museum in Phoenix and the Institute of American Indian Arts gallery. Auction records for his work range from modest to mid-tier, with a record sale of $250 for a landscape of Monument Valley. He passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 2021 at the age of 75.
