Franz Herbelot was a 20th-century French artist, active primarily during the 1940s and 1950s, whose identity may have even been a pseudonym. His work is best known for mid-century views of Paris—particularly intimate street scenes and architectural landmarks in areas such as Montmartre and La Madeleine—often executed as lithographs or watercolor sketches later reproduced in the studio and signed or labeled with edition numbers. Although little is documented about his personal life or training, his art has been frequently offered at auctions since at least the early 2010s, with prices ranging from a few dollars to a high record of about $425 for a Paris street-view watercolor sold in 2021. Herbelot’s works, whether watercolor or numbered lithograph, consistently evoke nostalgic, atmospheric impressions of Paris—especially scenes of bustling cafés, nighttime boulevards, and iconic landmarks under soft urban light.
