The canals of Venice are the lifeblood of the city, forming a unique network of waterways that weave through its historic architecture and define its character. Built on a series of over 100 islands in a shallow lagoon, Venice has no streets for cars; instead, its canals serve as transportation routes for gondolas, vaporettos (water buses), and private boats. The most famous of these is the Grand Canal, a sweeping S-shaped waterway lined with centuries-old palaces, churches, and bridges, including the iconic Rialto Bridge. Smaller canals, or rii, branch off in every direction, creating a maze-like cityscape that’s both romantic and practical. These waterways reflect the ingenuity of Venetian engineering and culture, where water, art, and daily life intertwine seamlessly.
