John Kelly was born in Scotland in 1939 into a seafaring family, and emigrated to Canada as a young boy. His experiences as a Merchant Marine seaman sailing off the coasts of Canada and Alaska would later be the subject of his art, after he spent nearly two decades in California performing as a musician with The Echoes, The Dolphins, and Don Ho. After meeting Lynton Kisteler at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena they collaborated to produce maritime works that were acquired by the Smithsonian Institute, and he spent the next several decades traveling the world producing prints and exhibiting his own pieces. He continues to lecture and paint from his home studio in Los Angeles.
