Born in Smyrna, Greece on Sept. 13, 1893, Varda was active in Paris before immigrating to NYC in 1939 and to California the following year. After a few years in an old red barn in Monterey, he settled into a houseboat in Sausalito. Primarily a portrait painter, he also did mosaics and collages. Called the "Last of the Bohemians," Varda died in Mexico City on Jan. 10, 1971.
