George Rodrigue was born in New Iberia, Louisiana on March 13th, 1944 and began painting early on while recovering from polio at the age of 8, studying art at the University of Southwest Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) and the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. After returning to Louisiana in 1968 with his wife and two sons, he focused on making portraits of famous figures and Cajun lifestyles, but achieved worldwide fame when his subject shifted in the 1990s to his beloved dog Tiffany after she had died, creating many paintings of her with blue fur and yellow eyes that became iconic and highly sought by celebrities. He died on December 17th, 2013 from cancer, and his works have continued to climb in price at auctions ever since.
