Jean‑Claude Picot (1933–2020) was a French painter and printmaker renowned for his vibrant, color‑rich canvases that celebrate Mediterranean life and the relaxed elegance of the South of France. Influenced by the bold hues and free brushwork of the Fauvist masters such as Maurice de Vlaminck, André Derain, and Henri Matisse, Picot developed a style rooted in Post‑Impressionism that emphasizes form, light, and mood over photorealistic detail. Beginning a full-time professional career in 1956, he created landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes, market scenes, and festival images — all suffused with what many describe as his personal spirit of joie de vivre. Whether rendered in oil, watercolor, watercolor‑ish media, etching, serigraphy, or mixed media, his works are marked by simplified forms, luminous color palettes, and a sense of warmth and celebration. Over five decades he exhibited globally and built a broad international following, and even after his death his paintings continue to evoke the breezy light and romance of Mediterranean life.
