Jay Hall Connaway (1893–1970).was an American realist painter best known for his powerful seascapes and landscapes, particularly those depicting the rugged coastlines of Maine, especially Monhegan Island. Born in Liberty, Indiana, he studied at institutions including the John Herron School of Art, the Art Students League in New York, and later in Paris at the Académie Julian and École des Beaux-Arts. His early life included wide-ranging experiences as a railroad worker, soldier, and medical draftsman during World War I, which helped shape his disciplined draftsmanship. Connaway became closely associated with the New England art colonies, living for many years on Monhegan Island and later in Vermont, where he also taught and ran art schools. Known for vigorous brushwork and dramatic depictions of sea, sky, and weather, he remained committed to realism throughout his career despite the rise of modernist movements, and his work is held in numerous major American museum collections.
