Bedrich Hoffstädter was a significant Slovak modernist painter, educator, and member of the influential “Generation 1909,” a group of artists whose work reflected the social and political realities of the mid-20th century. Born in Trenčín in 1910, he studied at the Ukrainian Academy in Prague and later at the Academy of Fine Arts under Willy Nowak, further enriching his artistic vision through study trips to Dresden and Paris. Hoffstädter became known for his dynamic depictions of urban life, sports, and modern society, characterized by expressive compositions, strong movement, and a refined sense of color and form. During World War II, his work also addressed the era’s human tragedy through more dramatic and emotionally charged imagery. After returning to Slovakia, he taught at the Pedagogical Faculty and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava, influencing a new generation of artists. His promising career was cut short by his death in a car accident in 1954, yet he remains an important figure in the development of modern Slovak painting.
