Eugène Beyer (1817-1893) was a French historical and genre painter, lithographer, and political figure born in Strasbourg in the early 19th century. He received his earliest artistic training from his father, the miniature painter Johann Daniel Beyer, before studying under Gabriel-Christophe Guérin in Strasbourg and the renowned academic painter Paul Delaroche in Paris. An active participant in the French Revolution of 1848, Beyer was elected to the National Constituent Assembly but was forced into exile in Switzerland after the political upheavals of 1849. Despite his political career, he remained dedicated to painting, producing works that focused on the history, culture, and traditions of Alsace, including depictions of significant historical events and everyday regional life. After returning to France, he continued to paint until his death in Nîmes in 1893. Today, his works appear in museum collections and at European auctions, where they are appreciated for their historical significance and detailed academic style.
