John Fulton Folinsbee (1892-1972) was a leading American landscape painter associated with the New Hope School and the movement known as Pennsylvania Impressionism. Born in Buffalo, New York, he overcame childhood polio and went on to build a distinguished career painting the industrial canals, river towns, quarries, and winter landscapes of the Delaware River region around New Hope, Pennsylvania. Although his early work reflected Impressionist interests in light and atmosphere, Folinsbee gradually developed a more personal, expressive style influenced by artists such as Paul Cézanne, emphasizing structure, strong brushwork, and emotional depth. His paintings are noted for transforming ordinary scenes into powerful compositions marked by bold color, mood, and design. Widely exhibited and honored during his lifetime, he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1953 and is remembered today as one of the most important figures in twentieth-century American landscape painting.
