Howard Hugh Bradford was born in Toronto, Canada in July 1919, and moved at a young age to Los Angeles, California. He spent his youth raising chickens and growing dahlias, the influence of which can be seen in his later paintings. After serving in the Army during World War II, Howard used the GI Bill to enroll in Chouinard Art Institute. He met the artist Dorothy Bowman and married her, and the two later studied together at the Jepson Art Institute and San Francisco Art Institute. Howard and Dorothy settled in Big Sur and became a part of the thriving art scene in the late 1950s. In 1960 Howard was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for creative printmaking. Bradford was a Lifetime Member of the Carmel Art Association, and his work can be found in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Library of Congress, Le Bibliotheque National de France, and in the Victoria & Albert Museum in England. He passed away in April 2008 in Big Sur, where his ashes were scattered into the sea.
