Frank Roth was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1936. In 1954 he moved to New York, where he studied first at the Cooper Union Art School and then in 1955 at Hans Hofmann's school. His first solo exhibition was at the Artists Gallery in New York in 1958. Early on he painted in a romantic Abstract Expressionist style, with large, loose-edged patches of color, and then developed a more restless, active treatment with loops, intercepted lines and torn shapes. For several years he traveled in Europe and Mexico before returning to New York in 1963 to become a teacher at the School of Visual Arts, and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1964. At this time he began to paint geometrically precise compositions in Surreal forms suggesting cars or airplane parts balanced against bright, broad skies. This phase petered out in the late 60s as he reverted to a more delicate style, filling his works with small forms floating in front of dappled or splattered patterns of light and shadow. He became Professor Emeritus at the School of Visual Arts in 2010, and passed away in 2019.

This particular piece was a personal gift to his friends Mel and Leta Ramos, two of the most important figures of the Pop Art movement.
