Hazel Soan (Born 1954) is a British painter who divides her time between London and Cape Town and often works on location in Africa. She is best known for her luminous watercolours—particularly her “wet-into-wet” technique—and expressive oils, using strong contrasts of light and shade to capture the essence of people and animals with vibrant immediacy. After training at Camberwell and Leicester and winning the Holbrook Trust Prize in 1976, she went on to an international career with solo exhibitions in countries such as Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Venezuela. Beyond her exhibitions, she has authored books, hosted television programmes like Splash of Colour and Watercolour Challenge, and led painting workshops and holidays. Her works appear in public, corporate, and private collections, including the National Portrait Gallery in London.
