Jean-Claude Picot (1933-2020) was a French artist celebrated for his colorful, joyful landscapes, cityscapes, markets, and seaside scenes inspired by the Mediterranean, especially the Côte d’Azur. He began his professional career in 1956, drawing inspiration from Fauvist painters such as Vlaminck, Derain, and Matisse, which is evident in his bright palette and expressive post-Impressionist style. Working in oil, watercolor, acrylic, etching, ceramics, and later serigraphy, Picot exhibited widely across Europe and the United States. His works remain popular for their cheerful, instantly recognizable aesthetic and their vivid evocation of relaxed French scenes.
