František Drtikol (1883–1961) was a pioneering Czech photographer whose innovative work helped shape the development of modern photography in the early twentieth century. Best known for his striking Art Deco and Symbolist-inspired portraits and nudes, Drtikol combined dramatic lighting, geometric forms, and expressive poses to create highly stylized images that blurred the line between photography and fine art. He studied photography in Munich before opening a successful portrait studio in Prague, where he gained international recognition. In the 1930s, he retired from professional photography to focus on painting, drawing, and the study of Eastern philosophy and Buddhism. Today, Drtikol is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Czech photography, celebrated for his artistic vision and lasting impact on photographic modernism.
