Francisco Rodríguez Oñate (1940–2019) was a distinguished post-war and contemporary artist from Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico. He pursued his formal art education at the Escuela Popular de Bellas Artes, where he studied under masters like Alfredo Zalce and Javier Arévalo, developing a practice often characterized by a dynamic fusion of traditional Mexican iconography and modern figurative abstraction. Throughout his career, Oñate held over 70 exhibitions internationally in Mexico, the United States, Russia, and France, and he was a notable cultural promoter, serving as director of the Centro Cultural Antiguo Colegio Jesuita and co-promoter of several Museums of Contemporary Art in Michoacán. His work, which included the transportable mural "Friendship between peoples," is known for trying to preserve Mexican traditions through art.
