Zen is a school of Mahayana Buddhism originating in China that emphasizes meditation (zazen) for the direct realization of one's innate Buddha-nature. One of the tradition's most iconic aspects is the Zen garden (or karesansui), a minimalist dry landscape featuring carefully raked sand or gravel, rocks, and minimal vegetation to symbolize water and natural forms. These gardens are structured around seven guiding principles, including Simplicity (Kanso), Stillness (Seijaku), and Austerity (Koko). Designed to create a calm, contemplative space, Zen gardens remain a fundamental part of Japanese design today.
