Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was a seminal Japanese ukiyo-e painter and printmaker, best known for his series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the iconic print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Born in Edo (modern Tokyo), Hokusai demonstrated prodigious artistic talent from a young age, studying under several masters and experimenting with a wide range of subjects and styles. His work spans landscapes, flora and fauna, actors, and mythical scenes, combining bold composition, intricate detail, and dynamic use of color. Hokusai’s innovative approach influenced not only Japanese art but also Western Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential figures in the history of printmaking and visual culture.
