Masami Nakayama (1898-1979), better known as François Nakayama, studied Yōga (Western-style painting) in Japan before moving to Paris in 1924, where he adopted his French moniker and studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Inspired by Impressionism and Romanticism, he developed a cross-cultural style through his studies in Paris and fresco painting in Italy. After returning to Japan, he pioneered color etchings and fresco projects, later becoming an art advisor to the American occupation and adopting Christian themes. Nakayama gained significant international attention for his hundreds of copperplate etchings and continued to exhibit globally until his death.
