Eugenio Carmi (1920-2016) was an influential Italian painter and sculptor best known as one of the leading figures of postwar Italian abstract art. Born in Genoa in 1920, he studied chemistry in Switzerland before returning to Italy to pursue art, developing a distinctive style based on geometric forms, bold color relationships, and industrial materials such as steel and iron. Carmi also worked as an artistic consultant for the Italsider steel company, where he explored the connection between industry and creativity. A close collaborator of writer Umberto Eco, he illustrated several of Eco’s books and exhibited his work internationally, including at the Venice Biennale. His innovative approach to abstraction and design left a lasting impact on modern Italian art.
