Eric Ernst was born in 1956 in Norwalk, Connecticut, the son of artist Jimmy Ernst and grandson of famed surrealist Max Ernst. He did not display an early interest in becoming an artist despite his family’s notoriety in the field, and graduated from George Washington University with a degree in Japanese Studies, moving to Japan where he apprenticed for a woodblock artist, studied Zen meditation, and DJ’d for a Tokyo radio station. His experiences in Japan inspired him to pursue art after all, and are reflected through the coloration, concepts of rhythm, and asymmetry in design in many of his abstract works. His work is also influenced by the geometric purity of the Russian avant-garde, Bauhaus movement, and his own father’s crisp, linear, compositional structures. His first solo show was at Benton Gallery in 1992, and since then he has expanded into three-dimensional works that have filled galleries, public collections, and private homes around the world.
