Willem de Kooning (1904–1997) was a Dutch‑born American painter and a central figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. Born in Rotterdam, he immigrated to the United States in 1926, eventually settling in New York City, where he became a member of the influential “New York School” of artists. De Kooning’s work is celebrated for its dynamic, gestural brushwork and its synthesis of abstraction and figuration, most famously in his series of *Women* paintings, which combined violent energy with sensuality. Over a career spanning seven decades, he explored painting, drawing, and sculpture, constantly pushing the boundaries of form, color, and space. His work profoundly influenced generations of artists and is represented in major collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Tate Gallery.
